The thesis project basis was combining what I learn about product design at Shibaura Institute of Technology, and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. There is a vast demand for prosthetic devices in Brazil with an affordable price range.


Most prosthetic devices have an aesthetic purpose - without any functional benefit to the user. It is necessary to make these technologies more accessible to the public. Therefore, the idea to design an open-source functional prosthesis that can meet primary user needs based on the Brazilian Scenario.

Problem Statement

In Brazil, the development of 3D printed prostheses is limited explored. Therefore, having this project within the open-source universe boost for this field to be extended. This project also encourages the development of professionals prosthetics forcing the market to present fairer prices and more innovative features to be competitive. 


Defining the project concept and ranking user needs.


the method of mood boards is a tool for designers to target a market and visualize feelings the product intends to compel. The lifestyle board symbolizes the user's personal and social values and represents their daily lives. The second is the representation of the emotions that the product aims to convey. The third, visual theme board, is a collection of products from any sector that manages to express the target mood.


Quality function deployment integrates customer requirements into product design. planning process with a quality approach to new product design, development, and implementation driven by customer needs and values. The information gathered relies on User Interviews, Doctor Interview, Visit to a Prosthetic Factory, and Therapists Focus group.

Sketches Ideation

First session Based on literature research and the mood board panels, the first ideation is fast and raw.

Second session This phase relies on the QfD to cluster the best sketches into 3 main ideas that contemplate the ranked user needs.

Third session The last sketching phase was to conduct in a focus group with therapists that treat amputees. Their input was based on the 2nd session sketches, pointing out improvements, strong and weak points.


Final Product

Furthermore, the academic paper can be accessed through the Lume UFRGS ( and annually marks around 200-300 downloads worldwide. My thesis was also registered as a technological patent (Patent no. br 23078.015329/2018-12), to protect the disrupt innovations made about the fixture on the limb and some other features. However, the research is still open for development and further contribution to society!
